Sclerotherapy

A variety of people of all ages and weights may develop small bothersome veins called spider veins on their legs. These veins develop as a result of genetics, jobs which require standing for long periods of time, pregnancies and trauma. Veins can develop on any part of the leg but are common on the inner and outer parts of the ankle, knee and outer part of the thigh. Sclerotherapy is a treatment where a medication is injected into the troublesome veins which injures the inside of the vein and causes the vein to disappear over time. It takes approximately 6-8 weeks for the veins to heal completely and once the veins are treated they do not return although people who are prone to developing spider veins will develop new ones over time. Veins treated with sclerotherapy are usually small and are minimally bulging over the surface of the skin.
